The Hungry Diner [Farm to Table!] Walpole New Hampshire

I don’t think I give rural New Hampshire enough credit for having some of the best places to eat. The Hungry Diner was no exception. When we drove up to it there were lots of people buzzing in and out and I thought perhaps it might be a tourist trap… but after going inside it was pretty obvious these were locals. They all knew exactly what to do to order. We did not.

Luckily after looking around I found a cache of menus and took a looksey. It was on the pricier side but wasn’t too bad. Especially since it appeared to be connected to local farms and serving organic food to boot. If that was the case the fall was the perfect time of year to visit. I noticed a butternut squash soup which immediately took my interest. Squash soup is very filling but not for long so I also got a side of fries and some soda that came in a glass bottle. My companion had a hankering for comfort food and got the macoroni and cheese with locally grown chicken.

After we ordered we sat down and waited with a few other groups of people. The tables that already had their food looked very happy and were burbling away. I was having fun looking at the chalk drawings everywhere. They were very well done! And when the food came out? Oh man, it was so much better than I was anticipating! The squash soup came with some crunchy probably house-made bread for dipping and a drizzle of oil. The fries came in a basket and were actually too much for the both of us! And the mac and cheese? Clearly made with love. A beautiful presentation of creamy deliciousness. I’m going to have to remember this place the next time I’m up north…
