Funny enough we hadn’t gone out to find the Flea Market at the Crossing, it just happened to be next door to the Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Monster Museum. So when in Rome… or rather Plainville Connecticut…
This was such a nice surprise! Especially since it was only open Saturdays and Sundays from 9-4 and that’s when we happened by. Usually the places that are only open a couple days a week are pretty modest but this place had a couple very decently sized floors and lots of different venders.
There was a nice selection of uranium glass, lots of other pretty colored glass, a whole corner full of antique cameras, some delightful holiday booths (which as it was October when we went was filled with Halloween spooky stuff,) a chandelier made of antique hand crank egg beaters, and a cool wicker wheel chair. We also both indulged our inner twelve year olds by finding various somewhat risque antiques hidden in dark corners. One of these was this weird Salvador Dali postcard depicting a skull but when you looked at it closer it was actually naked women. I don’t know why that amused me so much but it did. It was also nice to see a few spaces set up by local artists. One was selling home-made wreaths and I must say if I had a house and a front door I may have bought a Halloween themed one and just left it up year round.
I especially loved the whole section that seemed to all be old kitchen gadgets and utensils. The egg beater chandelier was but only a part of that. And hey, if you happen to be opening up a restaurant and want to go with the rural theme there was SO MANY tools you could find for fun wall decor there. My companion joked, “Who would buy a hand-crank egg beater?” I laughed and said I owned several. Whhhhhy? Because I fucking hate electric mixers that’s why. So big and clunky and a pain in the ass to clean. Also they’re useless in a power outage. Love my hand crank egg beaters – took me several flea markets and antique stores to find one that worked just right for me. Had I known about this place…. cough cough.
Eventually we moved on to the bottles. So many old glass bottles, some still with labels, others still contained various fluids I’d rather not test. Can you imagine the days when you could go to the pharmacy and just straight up order a bottle of arsenic? I got rats…
In any event this place was worth a little poke, especially if you’re already next door playing with the movie monsters!
