In an unusual adventure we decided to go to the local animal shelter. I know what you’re saying, “Don’t do that, you’ll end up with a dog or a cat or a goat or a goldfish or something.” And YEAH, it was hard to just look but we managed!
This was the first time I’d been to this particular animal shelter. I haven’t been to any in many years and honestly it was far more humane than the ones I remembered from my younger years. This place was oddly quiet. No dogs barking nonstop, no cat fur flying, and it didn’t even smell the least bit like animals. I know there’s clean but then there’s… whatever this was. And the animals themselves weren’t in cages and kennels with bars but rather behind plexiglass in their own little enclosures. It was… actually pretty nice considering we were in a shelter!
Then there was the animals… A lot of the usual varieties like the few voids in the cat section but also a lot of unusually pretty dogs. And two bizarrely colored rabbits who were also absolutely stunning. My companion fixated on an absolute chonk monster of a tabby who I think may have eaten the other cats. He certainly looked like it. But I guess he had a few behavior issues and needed daily medication for diabetes. He’d been here for two years, adopted once and returned after taking out a dog’s eye. Though he seemed sweet enough. We did ask to pet him and were allowed but he didn’t come because of the needing daily medication. It wasn’t a good fit so poor Charles was left behind. But maybe you might be looking for a single chonk monster of a cat…
Meanwhile I had my heart broken by a drop dead gorgeous pitbull mix with one blue and one brown eye named Boogie. She was SO GENTLE and sweet and looked a lot like my previous dog that absolutely devastated me with her passing about ten years ago. To be perfectly honest if I were set up for a dog I would have looked into adopting her. But alas! I am not in any way shape or form. I live dividing my time between two different states and neither location are great for a dog. But someday when I am settled on a farm I’ll probably be back looking. Pit bulls are the bestest. They just have so much soul. There was also a boxer (mix?) and a mastiff there too for anyone who likes the bigger bully breeds.
So that was our trip to the animal shelter. I did take photos and if any of them look like they’d be a good family member for you feel free to check out their website here: Potter Animal Rescue League.
